Mr. Phillips

This is Washington Phillips. He played an instrument called a "Celestaphone" also known as a "Fretless Zither", a "Phonoharp" or a "Dulceola. (All of which are slightly different, respectively). The instrument he is noted for playing was only made for a few years by two brothers in Ohio. This photo is from 1928. He was a traveling preacher who made magical ethereal music on his rare instrument. Look up his work. He will tell you the gospel straight up while not over looking problems of the church. i.e. "Denomination Blues." It's so  beautiful it's almost creepy. It sounds like a man possessed by an angel.

Blood Red Moons

she lays on the floor
says "you got that far away look in your eyes."
i say "I've been thinking about oil wells
& cold wars & table talk
& over sized cities incestuously crashing into each other.
I've been thinking about a transient Jesus & i believe
there are no more watchtowers.
yes i believe there are no more watchtowers,
just pillars of giraffes
tempting
flowing
tempting
flowing

"tell me what did you see?"
"two angels. two angels staring.
two angels staring back at me.
that's what i see."

we all got tired
tired of waiting & tired of choices
i wish i wish i wish i could be anywhere
but right here right now
then i see the blood red moons
& Galileo
Judas hanging from a tree.
they say "tell me what you see"
"two angels staring. two angels staring back at me."
